Venice Summer Institute 2022: Emergence and Dynamics of Personality and Attitudes over the Life Cycle
San Servolo, Venice, Italy
Scientific Organizers: Professor David E. Bloom and Professor Uwe Sunde
Economists typically view personality, attitudes and preferences as central determinants of decision making. While there is a consensus that heterogeneity in personality traits and preferences is an important driver of socio-economic outcomes, the emergence and development of personality traits and attitudes as well as their malleability and dynamics across the life cycle are still not well understood. Recent evidence has documented the role of non-cognitive skills that are formed early in life, often even in pre-school ages, for socio-economic outcomes in adulthood.
At the same time, some traits have been shown to change systematically over the life cycle, particularly in old age. The focus of this workshop will be on gaining a better understanding of the determinants and life-cycle profiles of personality traits and attitudes.
