Venice Summer Institute 2014: Demographic Change and Long-Run Development

In the past 200 years, the world has experienced unprecedented economic development as well as profound demographic changes. Many dimensions of these dynamic processes are not well understood. What are the underlying forces behind the different dimensions of economic and demographic development, and how are they linked? Why have some countries developed early on, others only with a delay, and why do many countries still remain trapped in poor living conditions today? How do the proximate and deep determinants of long-term economic development interact with demographic change? How do the disease environment, genetic and ethnic diversity and social conflicts interfere with the development process?

This workshop will provide a forum to discuss these and related open questions about the patterns of long-run growth and comparative development. The submission of both theoretical and empirical papers is welcome.
