Economics of Fertility

During his visit at CESifo, Petter Lundborg will work on several projects revolving around the economics of fertility. One such project, in collaboration with Erik Plug and Astrid Wurtz-Rasmussen, focuses on quantifying the long-term impact of having children on individuals' earnings. For this, they leverage administrative data from Denmark on couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. Using exogenous variation in IVF success, they study the child penalty in a 25-year perspective and assess whether children are the primary drivers behind the long-run gender gap in earnings. Additionally, utilizing the same data source, other projects entail investigating the implications of being an only child and estimating fertility spillovers.

Mr. Lundborg's research portfolio spans labor economics, health economics, and family economics. Areas of particular interest include the intergenerational transmission of human capital, the impact of social and educational interventions, health care economics, and gender disparities in the labor market. Moreover, he has explored themes in household finance, including the transmission of financial behaviors across generations and the influence of education on participation in financial markets. His research has been featured in leading journals in economics and finance.

Petter Lundborg is Professor of Economics at Lund University, Sweden. Previously, he has held a position at the VU Amsterdam. He is a research affiliate at IZA Bonn. Mr. Lundborg earned his PhD from Lund University in 2003. In 2018, he was awarded the Assar Lindbeck medal, a biannual prize given to Swedish economists under the age of 45 whose work has gained international recognition.
